Default 888 verses Apogee

I've read a lot of posts regarding how bad the 888 sounds. Is the apogee that much better? There is a big cost difference and I would love your opinions as to whether the difference is worth the price tag.

Thanks in advance - Peter

I can hear a big difference! The Apogee sounds more
clear
bright
warm
deep
energetic
sooth
analog
If you don't need to record more than 2 channels at a time, you could have a 882/20 connected to an Apogee Rosetta or PSX100 that sound even better than the AD8000.
I made this choice and the clients can hear the big difference!

I virtually never record more than two tracks at a time, and have an 888 and a Rosetta. And I'd love to get 8 more outs, but I'll be damned if I'm going to buy another 888.

Which one of those older interfaces will transmit the full 24-bit tracks even though they can't record at 24-bit themselves?

Or maybe I'm better off waiting till the new Apogee IntelliDAC comes out, and I'll have 16 additional 24-bit outs through my Adat bridge. Hmmm...

Oh yeah -- the Rosetta makes stuff sounds delicious. It can make the difference between a MOTU 2408 and the 888 totally negligible. To my ears anyway...

Get an 888 and a Nanosync clock generator. It sounds great and ultimately the consumer could care less.

I'm a diehard AD8K lover/user, but I must admit that my brief A/B with the 888/Nanosync combo, while not indistinguishable, was most impressive. Perfect world, go for the AD8k. But the 888/Nanosync world certainly does not suck. At least it's a world better than the purely 888 version. Which, by the way, also doesn't suck entirely...we're dealing with greys here, not black and white.

Then again, I've cut some pretty respectable sounding vocals using the wanky little audio ins on my Powerbook...
