Default Mono Track audio lowers after normalization

Hey guys,

A newer user of Pro Tools here. I'm using Pro Tools 11 and am having an issue with normalization. I am usually recording at a consistent level when I record clips for narration, and when I've gone to normalize my audio after finishing a take, the overall sound of my audio is louder. Recently, I have been recording voice over characters and song vocals (whose levels vary depending on the context of the scene or song) and when I've gone to normalize that audio, the wave forms are much smaller than my initial recording and the overall sound is significantly lower than before.

I'm not exactly sure what's wrong so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Some phrase must be exceeding the normalization criteria. I would try alt+a to be able to see the whole waveform at the same time, then use clip gain on that particular part(s), maybe add some light compression.

Thanks for the advice! I already have my compressor on, so I may just have to go in and fix the problem spots manually.

Or use AudioSuite Gain, first by finding the overall level, then raising the overall level by the amount you want and then using a Limiter on a light Threshold setting and -2.0 or -1.0 as the output.

Alternatively, bus the audio to an Aux Track and place your Limiter there, then use either Clip Gain or the Volume Line to bring the track up to an acceptable level. It's best practice to place real-time plug-ins on an Aux with the audio bussed to them. PM me if you like, I do a lot of voice work from home.
