I've been using Pro Tools for a long time (don't remember the version, but the UI was black & white and on a 20 MHz Mac) and I've never seen this before. How did I get here, and how do I loose this gray bar.

Take a look at your scrolling preferences and change it to No Scrolling. That might do it.

you're in continuous scroll mode.

Wow! Your a freakin genius! That did it, thank you very much.

Somehow scrolling preferences were changed to Continuous, put it back to Page and all is well. Time for a nap.
