Default Opening plug-ins on groups

I was just wondering if i could do that, open a compressor on a group of several tracks. i tried to do it but i wasnt really successful so i looked up in the guide and on the internet. do i have to open a different compressor for each track?

If you want to treat a group of tracks with the same plugin(s), create an Aux track and insert the plug(s), then bus all the tracks you want to effect to that Aux track.

You could also set the tracks you want to process as a group to the bus as their output. If that sounds confusing(it does to me as I read it back) take the tracks you want to process and change their outputs to a stereo bus, then create a stereo aux track and set the input to the same stereo bus. Now all the tracks will go thru this aux and you can process with plugins as a group.

i think the OP wanted to add specific plug-ins to each track at one time... sometimes you want to compress each vocal in a group of background harmonies or something like that. is there a way to do that? i know you can add plug-ins to all tracks at once by holding down alt when instantiating it. is there something similar for just tracks in a particular group?

Just select the tracks, or group of tracks, then hold Shift+Alt, and your inserts, i/o selection, etc. will apply to those tracks. I think the OP was asking about the busing routing, though.

i got pretty much confused. i am working on a little post production on a short movie, so i obviously want for example to have an eq filtering highs and lows on all the dialog tracks. so what is the preferred choice then? open a different eq for each channel or open the eq in the aux channel and rout all the channels to the bus in the aux input? same about compressor (limiter). as for parallel effect plugins i definitely need the aux track right?

as long as happy with same eq levels, comp levels on each of those tracks, then use the Aux bussing is the way to go. Saves on cpu useage (and easier). If want different settings on different tracks, need to do them separately on each track.

this probably confused me because im used to analog work, and though i could put them that way in analog to, usually e.q's and compressors go right after the channel, and not in a parallel way buy using an aux channel. thanks alot!

I think I know what you mean. With an analog console you just assign every desired channel to a buss and place your outboard in the line out of that buss. What is described here is essentially similar, you jus use an aux track to hold your plug-in, the input/output of the aux track is the equivalent to the I/O of a piece of outboard gear.
