Default Can't play any media files after optimization

Hi,

I optimized my Windows 10 system to be able to get Protools 12.5.2 to work better according to the guides here on Avid's site. It works flawlessly. BUT....

I can no longer play any MP3, wav or any other type of media file now. on the pc PT is installed on. I have tried to reload every setting, codec, and ran an SFC scan but nothing will allow my pc to play anything now....BUT....... if I open a PT session and play it it will play fine. My main question is , what in the optimization changes got disabled that controls this? I have tried everything I can think of except reloading Windows. If I copy the audio files (MP3,WAV etc) and run it on another pc it plays fine so it's not the file itself.

None of the media players will play any music files (on the system PT is installed on), iTunes, Media Player, Groove music etc, none of them so it has to be a setting in the pc now.

I'm stumped.
Thanks
Tom

Did you uninstall QuickTime for Windows? Though that should not effect the MS apps.

Chuck, I have the current version installed as well. iTunes also installed it when I updated it but still nothing will play. I tried reinstalling PT and that didn't work either.

Sorry, nothing else comes to mind right now other than check your Sound Control Panel assignments and exclusive settings, and try a repair on the QuickTime install.

What interface? With Windows setups, you should set windows>Sound Properties to NOT use the interface as the default playback device(use the on-board sound card for that, leaving the interface for Pro Tools, only)

So I should re enable my pc's internal sound card for playback of the files instead of having my Scarlett 18i20? I did disable the internal sound card recently but I had to because it interferes with PT.

Just wondering why the Scarlett wouldn't actually default as the only sound card the pc would use for all audio. Hmmmm seems stange but I'll do it and keep looking for ways to work around it.

Thanks

I think you misread albee's post - the settings you want in Sound control panel: onboard sound card(usually Realtek audio) "enabled" and "default", focusrite "enabled" NOT "default". I have had the sound control panel reset my focusrite as the default audio out so many times(which keeps it from being available as a Pro Tools Audio Engine) that I made a Sound control panel short cut on my desktop. You don't have to have your soundcard enabled but if it is set as default than it's less likely that windows will take over the focusrite outputs

Default Re: Can't play any media files after optimization

I was able to find a solution. I also found the problem by looking at all the hardware and drivers installed for audio. My nVidia video card has HD audio drivers that take control by default if the on board Realtec drivers are not enabled. The problem is that they do not play well with my Focusrite drivers causing a conflict. Having both drivers fighting with each other doesn't allow either to take dominance to play a file so both go into a disable mode. The media player doesn't know which driver to use to play the file thus the "not compatable error) I disabled it and made my Focusrite 18i20 the default audio card.

My files (mp3, wav etc) are playing fine now using the Scarlett 18i20 as the audio card. While I was in there I also updated my 18i20 driver to a more current one which took a little hiccup away from my PT12 that was also driving me nuts. (every so often I would get a very slight glitch in the program) while recording but that is now gone so far from what I can tell. It's amazing that something so simple can cause havoc! So thank you to everyone that offered advice.

I'm coming along with Protools and the learning curve is getting easier and easier as time goes by!

Thank you
Tom

As mentioned above, make the Realtek the default for Windows sounds/audio and Disable anything else in Sounds. Also, go into Device Manager and Disable the Audio part of the NVidia graphics card. And have a read through this thread.
