Re: Air Con in the studio, advice please.
Split air systems have directional louvers. Wherever you install it, have the louvers point towards the ceiling so it blowers the cold air up which will then fall down and blanket the room since cold air is heavier than hot. Depending on the size of your space, it shouldn’t take much to cool it down and maintain a comfortable temp.

Re: Air Con in the studio, advice please.
My control room is also a 20' x 20' room over the garage. Even though I have central cooling, the room gets about 10 degrees F warmer than the rest of upstairs due to electronic equipment, a refrigerator in the maid's kitchenette and water heater in the garage below. I bought a portable 10,000 btu A/C unit that keeps the room pretty cool. Even in the summer I can get away with not having to turn the 5 ton central air unit for all of my 2nd floor until about 1PM in the afternoon.
Here is a link to a picture of it in action: https://i.imgur.com/09XuQeT.jpg It has 3 fan speeds and even a timer that I can use to turn it on early before I get upstairs. Timer can also be used to turn it off at night, but I just use the remote to turn it off manually.

Re: Air Con in the studio, advice please.
Ok so the furthest away from the door is behind mixing console, when it arrives Monday hopefully the flare can be angled up so not blowing directly at me. The next problem I have is the battens behind the plaster board are not evenly spaced so I’m wondering if I could fix it to the plaster board with these

So now you have a large piece of plywood securely mounted to your drywall over the whole surface area (glue) and secured with lag bolts (left/right edges) to the wall studs. Then you mount your A/C unit to that piece of wood (you can go through it too.) The 3/4" thick wood piece will hold the securing bolts threading for the A/C strongly and you don't have to worry about where the studs are anymore. Also, remember to pre-drill pilot holes and use an electric screwdriver with a lot of torque because the grip and hold of putting those bolts through will be very strong.

Re: Air Con in the studio, advice please.
Thanks BScout but then I will have an unsightly piece of wood hanging behind the air con unit that can be seen. As from memory the battens are quite far apart

Here in the US they build standard walls with studs on 16 inch center. That's so you can have a standard 4x8 foot sheet of plywood secured to a stud towards each side edge (assuming a vertical placement of said wood). My house is a bit different as I think the builders were drunk. In the same wall studs can vary from 16" to 17" to 18" and inbetween center to center. |

Re: Air Con in the studio, advice please.
As Jack mentioned, you paint the wood before mounting the A/C — often the same colour as the drywall behind it so it disappears.
16” OC (on center) is standard spacing post WW2 18” OC was a common spacing in housing construction pre WW2 to save material cost for interior walls and is still used (and allowable by most building codes) 24” OC is getting more common for even more material cost savings though it takes planning (no load bearing walls, etc)
