Default Plugins folder

Pro Tools Geeks, please HELP !
1. A webstore advice me to run Pro Tools 9 full installer first before installing the update, why ? I own the very last version of Pro Tools 8 and I thought I only needed to install the updater ?!?!?!
2. If I really have to use the full installer, I guess all my plugins will disappear and that cannot happen ! Does anyone have a suggestion ?
I know Pro Tools 9 is a major upgrade but i'd prefer to use the updater only ;-)

The "webstore" is correct.

While you most certainly *can* install just an update... Uninstalling PT8 first makes for a cleaner install and is therefore less likely to have issues. Personally, I reinstalled the whole OS first, and PT9 has yet to crash on me. YMMV of course.

That being said, uninstalling Pro Tools will not uninstall your plugins. Even a "clean" uninstall leaves the plugin folder intact.

It is always best practice to take a day off and make a very clean install every time you do a major version upgrade. That is, backup everything, wipe the system hard drive, install fresh operating system, and then all the tools you need.

This is the only way of avoiding strange bugs that nobody has not been able to foresee...

Even if you lose your plug-ins- most RTAS and TDM plug-ins require a minor download and a few minutes to reinstall, with the exception of maybe some virtual instruments with large sample libraries... if you legitimately own your plug-ins you shouldn't have a problem...

I usually copy the plug-in and settings folders before wiping
a) it's a refrence if new plugs were installed
b) I can almost always copy something back
