Default ATA100 or SATA

Hey All,

I'm still finalizing my specs for the new rig listed below. A good friend of mine is building it and has helped out with the gajillion questions that have arisen during this often arduous process. Today after reviewing my specs he shot me an email that the TYAN S2877ANRF-RS uses SATA and that the WD hard drives are ATA100. After again reading the top of the Best Desktop thread for the 6000th time, I noticed that Allen(you out there bro'?) specified ATA100 HD's. Unless I've gone completely mad, the link to the specified mobo uses SATA.

I went to my trusty New Egg page and looked at the specs for the Tyan which seemed to indicate that it uses both?

I need some help. Could someone who's sure what's what please clue me in with a quick tutorial or link me to the apt threads. I'm wicked busy this week and as much as I'd love to slog through threads , I can't make the time and was hoping to order everything yesterday. I'm glad he caught it now though.

Thanks for any help,

Dave

Check the MB specs... If it allows SATA, go with SATA - it's the newer (and faster) technology.

Also, ATA133 replaced ATA100 quite some time ago... Good luck...

If you are going with a single monitor, I highly recommend the largest you can afford. Right now you can get a Dell 22 inch widescreen for $296.

Go with SATA. You can get (if you had the money) the WD Raptor on the System drive, and get WD Caviar SE16 SATA drives. Or if you really need storage, get the Segate 750GB drives with SATA. Terabyte drives is also on the way, Hitachi is saying that you can get 32MB cache on the SATA editions.

Yep, looks like SATA's the thing. Aside from that I think I'm good to go and will order Monday - barring any other revelations.

The price on the 20" Widescreen is killer at $179 after a $40 rebate, and I'm going with the WD 80GB(system), and 250GB (audio). Sure...1000GB...I'll be set for now with 250. Cheap though, huh? I wish ram were so cheap.
