Default Audio Leveling Question

How do you make all audio clips in a track to where they all have the same amount of volume?

You can go through manually adjusting the clip gain of every clip, or you can RMS normalize the clips via the normalize audiosuite plugin.

Keep in mind that setting clips to some arbitrary RMS number will not necessarily make them sound the same level.

Rich. I noticed that. What is the normalize even for then. So the defaulter thing is what does it?

Rich was pointing out that RMS normalization may not match the loudness from clip to clip as good as you might want. Try RMS normalization and if you’re happy with the results then don’t worry about it. Personally, I’d use RMS normalization and then make any clip gain tweaks needed as I worked through the project.

Yes - it's a great tool and can get you 90% there, but in the end use your ears. I have a client who's always looking at the waveforms saying "that clip doesn't look as loud", and I say "yeah but it sounds fine!"

cwsand. I get what your saying. It's like even if the wave forms match up one will still sound a lot louder than the other. Because it depends on how it was recorded. I tried to find the defaulter but its like $99. Is there somewhere I can get it free?

The Normalize plugin is included with Pro Tools.

I'm talking about the defaulter plugin that rich mentioned with a link. The defaulter plugin and the normalize are 2 different things. Right?

Defaulter is an automated way to go through and normalize many clips to an arbitrary RMS value. It essentially just automates the Gain plugin. I do wish the Gain plug supported LKFS normalization though.
