Default MIDI Plugin Design

Hi,

I'm designing a MIDI plugin/standalone composition aid as part of my dissertation. It will analyse, match, and manipulate MIDI. (still toying with features) Audio side will be minimal, if any. (tones to preview notes.)

I've a little experience with Puredata, however i'm unsure if it will be suitable for the more complex features. The most lightly approach is I will work with a programmer.

1. what programming software is used in plugin design?
2. can you recommend a programmer/company which specialise in plugin design?
3. is there a suitable community/forum or resource for discussion of plugin design/audio programming?

I have passed on a Link to this thread to AVID to make sure that you get the best answer on this.

MIDI plug-ins in Pro Tools would be interesting.
Gate/Arpeggiator however is the only thing that come to mind.
What are some other thoughts?

Here's the one I'd like to see! Originally created by Dr. Emile Tobenfeld for the Atari ST MIDI computer, KCS (Keyboard Control Sequencer) was a full on recording, mixing program from the early days of MIDI interface. The PVG (programmable variations generator) module inside the KCS is the real fire. I've never seen anything remotely like it since. It allows the user to create defined algorithms that in turn will create variations of midi sequences according to that algorithm. Results can be cumulative or unique. Similar in some ways to the kinds of things that Regroove attempts to do with Reason or the note vary option there....but way more sophisticated.

If this could somehow be turned into a MIDI plug-in for Pro Tools, personally I think it would quickly become a red hot staple in many studios. The ability to create rhythm variations or arps on the fly with this concept would be powerful in today's DAW world. Just my opinion, FWIW!

Is this available anywhere still, and would it run on any kind of Atari Emulator? I would be interested in just checking it out, sounds cool.

I wish I knew the answer to that. I had an Atari emulator way back that ran on Win-95 or 98, and as I recall I couldn't get KCS to work on it....mostly just the ST games and such. MIDI, if I recall, didn't work at all. But that was ages ago!

It IS cool...way cool. I think it would be a hot seller if someone could convert it for use with today's DAW's, especially Pro Tools!

It's a shame that apps like this die with their platforms. I still have a mac iicx that runs an editor program for my GR-30 synth. OS 7.5. I guess finding a working ATARI is probably the best way to use KCS.

I'm curious if someone has done anything like this with Kontakt script or the like yet.

Okay, I take back what I just wrote above. I just found this page where you can apparently still download the original program for free to run in a Windows environment. I don't have time to fool with it right now, but I am definitely going to.

I have to wonder how hard it would be to convert this over to being a plug-in for Pro Tools or any other DAW? I'm not a progammer, so I really don't know.
