Default "unable to locate digidesign hardware.." 11r

Pro Tools 8.0.5
Intel i5 3570k
Windows 7
Eleven Rack with expansion pack

It had been several months since I had booted up Pro Tools to tinker with recordings and this time for some reason play back sounded very garbled. I closed that session and opened another and I got the same thing, garbled sound. So, thinking it was a driver issue, I reinstalled the Eleven Rack_1_1_11 driver and got no where. still garbled sound. Anyhow long story short I have now uninstalled PT and completed a full reinstall: 8.0 to 8.0.5 and the Eleven Rack driver and the Expansion pack. But now I get the "unable to locate digidesign hardware.." error. ... over and over and have no idea why PT won't fully boot up.

any help would be very much appreciated.

Well, after a full reinstall of Windows 7, Windows updates and Pro Tools 8 through 8.0.5, Eleven Rack drivers, all of the Windows 7 Optimizations for PT, I still get the same error..."unable to locate digidesign hardware"...

I have a new USB cable coming tomorrow....but apart from that I'm stumped.

Have you made sure that under Control Panel "Sounds" the 11 Rack is not allocated to Windows audio?

So when I go to Control Panel > Sounds > Playback tab, the 11r shows up as a Speaker. In the Playback tab you can have a Default Device and a Default Communication Device and then everything else is "Ready". By everything else I mean line 1/2, 3/4, S/DIF from the 11r and then all other inputs on my motherboard. Initially Windows had made the 11r the Default Device so I changed it to outputs on the motherboard. After doing this I tried booting PT and still get the same " unable to locate hardware" error message.

So I have a cheap Asus laptop running Windows 10 that I also have PT 8.0.5 installed on and found that the 11r specific driver wasn't installed at all... and it still worked... somehow. But that got me thinking it could be more driver related and long story short I tried installing one of the early versions of the 11r driver 1.1.6, instead of the newest one 1.1.11 and well things finally installed fully. ... FINALLY

for anyone that has the "unable to locate digidesign hardware" error, try using the old drivers.... cause it worked for me.
