Default ILok 1,2 and now 3?

I've had an ILok 1 and account for years now and it and all my plugins contained are working fine and I'm happy with them. Then ILoK 2 came out and now ILok 3 which has more storage and is supposed to be faster(?) than the others. I'm noticing now that some plugin system requirements specify an ILok 2 as storage. Why this is is a bit of a mystery to me as even on the ILok site it doesn't explain why this is? OK I get the storage capacity thing...but I've asked my audio producer friends about this and no one can explain why you have to get an iLok 2 to run these plugins or even Pro Tools...why you must have this ILok 2? Please post a site or link that explains why this gratuitous requirement trend is so important for these plugins. It's ridiculous!

You obviously know the reason. Companies need to make money.

ILok2 was introduced to improve the security/encryption on the original iLok. Fairly widely discussed at the time. Many people appreciated the smaller form factor at least. The reason for an iLok3.... the same as an iLok2.

The iLok 1 encryption/protection was hacked, so a lot of software that used it became available without paying for it.

ILok 2 solved that problem. I've not come across anyone saying that iLok 2 has been hacked as yet.

I have close to 100 licenses on my iLok 2, and that is less than 20% of its capacity. So I doubt capacity is the reason for iLok 3. And speed of transfer of licenses to from the iLok is really insignificant, a few seconds not worth worrying about, it's not like license transfers are taking place multiple times every day.

But I wonder if iLok 3 is out because somebody somewhere knows that a hack is imminent? Or just as encryption technology improves, why not implement it to keep the hackers further at bay?

Of course, making money by forcing, at some point in the future, everyone to move to iLok 3, is another powerful reason why software companies might 'require' their future license updates to only reside on iLok 3 devices.

Well it has been hinted at in the last 6 months or so......

In whispered tones, after the studio has been shut down, it's been hinted at.......

I've not seen anything personally but it has been suggested

OK I get all that but would having an Ilok 1 prevent you from downloading and installing say Slate plugins that say you must have an ILok 2? I could try it but would it halt the download or would you get a nag screen from your iLok?

Thus far I haven't seen anything requiring 3. Holding more licenses is a necessity for people running laptops so I suspect that's part of why they moved on to a new one.

You simply won't be able to move a license that requires iLok 2 to an iLok 1. Every license in your iLok account shows which options are available. The iLok 1 icon will be greyed out if it's an iLok 2/3 only license.

...anybody tried one of the generation 3 iLok´s on USB 3 ports?
Just curious if the USB 3 issues of iLok 2 may have been solved in any way with version 3?
This imo could be a reason to replace the iLok 2 with an iLok 3.
However me myself owning 3 generation 2 iLoks which I would not want to throw in the trash
just for an -indeed- cooler optical appearance. If it will be more sturdy than version 2 this
might be an advantage though.
