Older PT Sessions

PT- 6.9.2 cs1 HD 196 i/o

All of a sudden, I'm having problems opening older PT sessons. It crashes every time it gets to the "Restoring Playback Engine"

Newer sessons open just fine.

Any clues?

create a new session then "import tracks" from the file menu.

already tried that...

same results..

the "new" session can see the data from the older session... but once you make your selections and hit the 'import' button... PT crashes.....

Hm.... did you trash all Digidesign Databases, DAE Prefs, DigiSetup.OSX, and the Volumes folder... repair permissions etc.... (All of the standard troubleshooting tricks) ???

If so...and you still get the error, have you tried importing a track from a problematic session, and unchecking all of the data to import from that track, starting off, just importing the blank track, with no regions, i/o, automation etc... associated with it.... and keep importing the track, checking down the list, 1 by one, importing each parameter of the track, till you get your crash.... you may find that it's the track's i/o, or automation, or plugin that is crashing the system.


If you can't even import a track, with no data associated with it... blank... without PT crashing, after all of the standard troubleshooting "tips" - you should post a link to the PTS file with no audio.

If it crashes elsewhere, and is duplicated on one of our machines, I'm sure digi would be interested in it.

Ok..

It LOOKS like just a bad session file. I did trash all the prefs as you suggested, and the problem file still crashed PT, but in trying other 'older' session files.... everything now seems normal.

you might try importing a few tracks at a time.

I have had just one bad track do as you describe

Perhaps I spoke too soon.

I have a bunch of session files that now seem to not work.

These have been back up to tape w/ Retrospect, and restored to a HD. The audio files all play fine by themselves, but some of the session files will NOT WORK.

When opened, they crash PT when it gets to the part of changing audio engines... and some seem to be looking for a video file, although I KNOW there is no video file associated with the session.

Once PT crashes, the only way to get back up and running is a re-start.

1. Is there something 'special' about a session file that is "different" than an audio file that would explain why the audio files come thru the backup-restore sequence just fine but the session files do not ?

2. Is anyone interested in looking at a session file to try to figure out if it is really corrupt, or there is some type of backwards computability issue going on.

Just as a note:

Older sessons are restored to a software RAID HD, then dragged across the network to the local audio HD. Is it possible this is part of the problem?

Were these backed up with retrospect on OS 9 or OS X?

Try restoring them on the same OS they were backed up on.

hmmm good question.

SOME of the files were orginally backed up in OS9, then restored, and backed up in OSX. Mainly due to changing from DDS to Exabyte. I've used some of these files before and they worked just fine, but for some strange reason, now they won't open. Again.. I find it bizarre that the audio files which all went thru the same backup / restore sequence play just fine, but the session files do not.

I actually thought it may be some type of permission problem, but that doesn't seem to be the case..

Still looking and open to any ideas.
