Default new mac mini announced - gone down hill?

I was about to buy a new mac mini - when I heard rumour of an announcement coming..

yesterday I could have bought a quad core 17 at 2.6 GigHz

today I can only buy I7 dual core 3.0 ghz

should I be disappointed?

why have they gone from quad core to dual core?

or get on Ebay?

Default new mac mini announced - gone down hill?

Bummed myself... was looking for a little more, 32 gig mem, better processor. I guess they see the entry level Mac Pro as the next step up from the old Mac mini. They are missing an op here if you ask me... it's pretty big hole in the lineup: wanting a slightly slower quad or 6, with much lower graphics power and 32 gig mem max. damn.

Here's the reason. People are buying mac minis and rack mounting them in adapters that even make PCIe available. Faced with that option of have expansion at a far lower price point, the mac mini become a far more sensible choice than a new mac pro. Apple realised that one of their own products was detracting from their flagship, so crippled the mac mini. It's simple really - they want you to spend $7k and be locked into thunderbolt.

This can only be good news for ProToolsPC - they currently make the only truly viable Hackintosh in my opinion.

People are happily running HDX and their own choice of GPU and SSD, on modded MacMinis. You can imagine the conversation, "sir, sir, people are doing what they want with our machines sir. They're even using, sorry to say this out loud sir, third party hardware, which has industry standard connectors which we don't own the licence for. Oh, and I'm sorry to mention this as well sir, but they're even installing their own ram and making our hardware fit into ain industry standard rack. What shall we do sir? This goes against every restrictive practice that we've spent hours crafting to maximise the customer spend with us. This won't do, customers having a choice. "

Permanently. This is Apple trying to rewrite history. Again.
