Default Pro Tools HD Thunderbolt Native box and External Display

I'm new to the Apple/Mac world. Yes after many (20+) years on PCs I finally converted to a Mac system.

I have the MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012 connected to a Pro Tools HD Thunderbolt Native box (running PT 10 HD Native).

I'm using the "Thunderbolt Port" but isn't that the same port (mini display port?) that would be used to connect an external monitor?

I need to have the Pro Tools HD Thunderbolt Native box and external HDMI-capable LED monitor operating at the same time.

Yes. I'll be getting a TB-compatible monitor.

The Pro Tools HD Thunderbolt Native box has one port so it will be at the end of the chain.

I'm assuming the monitor will have two ports...one from the MacBook and one pass-thru.

The problem is that I think the only Thunderbolt display available is the Apple one, and I'm pretty sure it must be placed at the end of the chain as well.

Actually, incorrect.
The apple TB display has a second thunderbolt port on it to just that- daisy chain. Often I'm running a rig where my HD Native thunderbolt box is daisy chained after the monitor. Works perfectly.

Seems that the Thunderbolt display indeed has a Thunderbolt port for peripheral connections:

http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html

"Peripheral connections

Three powered USB 2.0 ports
FireWire 800 port
Gigabit Ethernet port
Thunderbolt port
Kensington security slot"

I have an IMAC 2.8 2011, the i7 upgrade model which i presume will work with Native thunderbolt. The Imac only has one thunderbolt output and the native thunderbolt box doesn't have a thru. So how can i without buying an apple monitor run my second non- thunderbolt LCD monitor in this setup?
