Default Control 24-Want to remove side panels and armrest for resurfacing

Hello,

Has anyone removed either the side panels or armrest or both on their Control 24 for refinishing??

I think I remember seeing the armrests were once available thru Digi/Avid.

I plan on refinishing these parts, as the sticky, dust collecting "rubber-like" texture needs to go.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Armando,

I did just what you are describing and it was not easy. Needed right angle screwdrivers, flex-bit adaptors, mini-vicegrip pliers and lots of time. I did eventually get it apart and cleaned and it is very satisfying to get that crap off.

I have since done my other one WITHOUT removing the pieces and this was equally difficult, primarily because you can't go wild on those parts while they are attached, and going wild is what it takes to remove that garbage. I used every solvent known to man, including some that required rubber gloves. I'm estimating each method required about 20 hours of work!!

By the way, no refinish is necessary. All parts have a nice satin plastic finish that I have found quite suitable.

I recently removed the rubber coating from my armrest. Like pretty much everyone else's, mine had become a tacky dust magnet. I used a total of three Scotch Brite "No Scratch" sponges, a bucket of diluted Spic and Span and some elbow grease. It came off pretty easily and did not take very long. I didn't remove the armrest either. I used a minimal amount of liquid and was very careful about not getting any beyond the edge of the armrest. Worked great and the plastic surface underneath looks good. I don't feel the need to refinish it with anything.

Thanks!

What color is the armrest without the coating?

Also, is it plastic or metal?

Thanks again!

The armrest is semi-shiny black plastic. Here's a pic that I think is representative of how it actually looks.

My Control|24 is an Argosy console so although the sides have also gotten a little tacky, they haven't accumulated the crazy amount of dust that the armrest did. They're not really exposed so it hasn't been a big concern for me.
