Default iLok drops connection in 11?

Hi. Just curious if others in Pro Tools 11...

I have mentioned this one other time and few weeks after 11 came out.

I have now twice since 11 came out had my iLok just stop communicating.
(A bunch of popup no license errors) Pro Tools Kindly let's you save then quits.

I feel it's a USB/OS and or Hub issue as I have a Waves license on the same hub.

However I've only been in PT's 11 when this has happened and it's never happened when in 10.3x (Could just be coincidence)

The first time I was in OS 10.8x and #2 just happened in my test system 10.9

Re-plug the hub and all is back.

You may wish to try a non hub USB port.

Also make sure USB power management is disabled. It shuts the port down when it feels like it. But yes, I-lok recommends NOT using the I-lok in a hub.

"USB power management " Can this be accessed on Mac (Terminal)-
With e-licenser, Ignite key, WavesUSB, iLok, a Power-hub for me is essential.

As this has been solid for years I'll lean towards USB napping in the OS.

Thank you for the views!

USB power management is for Windows PCs. But still make sure your Mac is fully optimized.

Since you are on Mavericks who knows what you might run into, make sure you have a stack there that is as well/officially supported on Maverics as you can get.

There is no "USB napping" in Mavericks. There is app napping, which you can/should try disabling for the apps you are using.

Is your iLok software up to date.

You might need the hub but for now you need to try the iLok in a direct USB port and see if it works or if the hub is causing you problems. Disconnect as many other USB devices as you can and try several ports on the Mac.

Try it more on other Macs or PCs, most importantly you are trying to work out if the iLok is intermittently faulty and needs to be replaced. If you suspect that I would try transferring the license to another iLok2 while you still can read the current one at all.

This is ridiculous. On my Windows laptop, I have three USB ports. I use one for my Focusrite 18i20, one for my main hard drive, and one with a four port hub for my iLok and other hard drives or mouse. The new Mac laptops only have two USB ports.

I don't know how they expect people to use their dongle when there are other more important devices that need to be connected directly to the computer and not on a hub.

There's almost no data being transferred through the iLok and it can't use more than a few micro volts, so there shouldn't be a reason that it should not work on a hub.

FWIW, I use my iLok on a four port hub every time with no issues on my Windows laptop.

I'm not clear what you are really upset about. Pace does not control every other company/chipset vendor making a USB hubs/chipsets, or control what else is using them on a computer, and cannot guarantee that their USB device will work perfectly with all third party hubs and uses. And for most use there is no problem with an iLok on a hub. But that is not always true, so when there is a problem one of the obvious things to test is to try without the hub.

Ever ran a USB sniffer or tried to debug some horrible USB device incompatibility problems? Thought things appear simple there are lots of potential things that could cause problems.

To be safe, I'd get a new ilok and x-fer the licenses asap just in case it's starting to fail. Also, Anker http://www.ianker.com/USB-3.0-Hubs/category-c11-s1make the best hubs imho. Might be time for a new one.
