Only one device can be the master clock, the other 2 will need to be set to sync to incoming clock.

Post more details of your setup and we'll try and help you out.

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to set up my ADAT to use the lightpipe in on my 002 rack, I'm getting level to the ADAT just fine but whenever I try to set the clock to ADAT in the hardware setup I get that message. And no matter what I do I don't get any signal into PT. I've swapped cables and all that of course. Any ideas?

Please provide more information on your system (Pro Tools version, OS version, etc) as well as how you have everything connected.

The more detail you can provide, the easier it is to troubleshoot.

You may want to check out the "Help Us Help You" link in my signature for more info...

No problem. Mac OSX Tiger on iMac (last version before intel), PT 7.1, Digi 002 rack. Everything works and sounds great. Hooking up to a black-face ADAT, lightpipe in and out. Both lightpipe cables have been tested. I get signal to the ADAT just fine. I open a new session in PT, set to 16bit 48K (I've also tried pitching down the ADAT and doing it at 44.1K). When trying to select ADAT as the clock source in the hardware setup I get the message "external clock choice invalid. reverting to internal."

Leaving the clock source internal, when I record enable a track and select one of the ADAT inputs which is getting signal, I do not get input into PT. In the hardware setup I made sure that lightpipe is NOT set for S/PDIF. I checked the routing and it all seems sane (the default setup should be perfect).

Thanks for your help!

If you have clock source set to 'Internal', do you also have the ADATs set to sync to external clock? You'll have to forgive me if I can't remember if/how this is possible - it's been many years since I've used and ADAT.

If the ADAT locks to the clock coming from Pro Tools and you're still not getting signal coming back from the ADAT, then I would say you either have a bad output port on the ADAT, a bad input port on the 002, or the cable is intermittent.

One other thing - are you absolutely sure both your session sample rate and the ADAT sample rate match (typically 48k)?

Yeah, it has been a while since I've suffered in ADAT world as well.... I will check again on the ADAT to see how to make it synch and make sure there's no problem there. I've used this particular ADAT with an old 001 system a few years back and it worked perfectly so I doubt that the output is bad and like I said I've used multiple cables; that's one of the first things I checked of course. I have tried both 48K with the ADAT set normally and at 44.1K with the ADAT pitched down so I'm sure the sample rate matched. Even without synching to either clock, there still should be input into PT. It seems to me there's a software setting that is off. Is the default routing scheme correct? I tried other routings to no avail. Are there other settings that I've missed? I know there was some funkiness with S/PDIF with PT 7; I've had several friends that had to stand on their heads and cross their fingers to make that work correctly. I wonder if it's related to that.

I have used ADAT on a 002 with success. Make sure the clock is set for ADAT optical and the sampling rate is the same.

Do you see a red light on the ADAT output?

...that's the problem, when I try to set the clock to ADAT I get the message which is the title of this thread. And yes, the red LED is on both at the unit and at the end of the lightpipe.

Tell me about your routing setup (in PT, not your hardware). Are you using the default settings? What did you have to do to get it working the first time?

Have you tried deleting and 'defaulting' all your input paths in IO Setups? If you haven't, you may want to - especially if you've changed from optical spdif to optical ADAT at any point.
