Default Massey DRT vs slate trigger

Who's had experience with both?

I'm looking to get one soon ! Thanks guys

Also what's the audio suite version in PT 10.3.7 look like? Any stability issues for DRT ( that's the way I'm leaning)

There are loads depending on what version you buy I brought trigger platinum so I got all the samples you can use your own to. The samples are dry and you can mix in the ambience as you like :)

Also there are several expansion packs. Chris Lord Alge for example. Great for heavier stuff.

They're kind of two different products. DRT is primarily for analyzing a drum track and outputting midi, whereas Trigger is for drum replacing on the spot in real time. Trigger also has a way to output midi, but I haven't explored it much.

I find DRT to be kind of clunky to use, and I feel that Trigger is way more versatile in every way.

If you look at the product descriptions on Sweetwater for Trigger EX and Trigger Platinum, it gives an idea of the difference.

The main difference is the number of different samples. Platinum has about 4 times the amount as EX. Another difference is that Platinum now has an extra feature which is some kind of gating tool.

For only $50 more, it's definitely worth it to get Platinum. They also have various expansion packs that are excellent.

Note that the various expansion packs, and the stock Trigger samples, are the same as those available for Steven Slate Drums 4. The only difference is that the Trigger stuff does not include any cymbals or hi-hats.

Also, there are more and more 3rd party companies making samples that are compatible with Trigger. Very good ones, I might add.

And, Trigger comes with an easy to use tool called the Instrument Editor (a separate application) that makes it very easy to convert WAV files and make your own samples that work in Trigger. These could be drums that you record yourself, or other existing WAV files.

As for the Slate samples, I find them to be more useful than many would have you believe. They take additional processing very well and I find that is the key to making them fit your music.

All of the Slate samples have both close miked and ambient perspectives, and you can mix/blend them the way you want. So don't be put off by what you heard.

Finally, both these products have demos available, so you can check it out yourself. DRT is a lite version, but gives you a basic idea. Trigger demo comes with a couple of kicks and snares to give you an idea how it works, and limits a few features.

If you like you can have a look at this track at about 2:50 to listen to some kick and toms, as I have used them in a metal track with Trigger 1:

Apart from the cymbals I replaced all drums with Slate samples on the entire album.

I use both, depending on the situation.

I find DRT a lot more flexible compared to Trigger2. Creating a midi track means I can use all manner of VI's to replace the snare - mainly a couple of NI drum libraries of BFD2.

Trigger2 is a lot more straight forward. Just slap it on a track, choose your snare sound and go. I really dislike the snare sounds that come stock with it though. Over processed and not my thing, tonally.
