the answer to my tiket has just arrived and as it was suspected it was a bug

this is avid's answer

Apologies for the problem, we are working quickly to fix it. Hopefully we'll post a new build in the next few days. Until then, feel free to roll back.

...now that’s a wierd bug. I don’t know why I think this was intentional. Anyway my trust in this company has gone south.

Well, it really begs the question: Why would Avid have even halved the tracks as part of the development/testing cycle? As a programmer, I see absolutely no benefit in such a temporary change. And in Vanilla only?? It does smack of a trial balloon....

If I were a paranoid conspiracy theorist (and who's to say I'm not), I would wonder if perhaps Avid's long-term strategy hasn't been, for some time now, something along the lines of this:
There's a rather cynical theory in business that I've heard of, which basically recommends dumping those customers responsible for 80% of your workload, but who only contribute 20% to your revenue stream. Arguably, small users constitute the primary demographic which continually pesters Avid with unreasonable requests (e.g. features which have been present in other DAWs for years).

By divesting itself of these 20%'ers (through negligent, or even malicious attrition), Avid becomes free of having to keep up the pretense of being responsive to them, and enables itself to return to its old full-pay model, whereby only medium-to-large studios and production houses can afford to pay its exorbitant subscription fees, while having fewer expectations in return. After all, being on "the" standard is what's really important to the big fish -- much more so than having the bells and whistles which small studio owners would find invaluable. As such, the big fish are far less... er, "demanding" on Avid.
But that's just, as I alluded to, the ravings of a madman.

I'll give Avid the benefit of the doubt on this one, but it won't preclude my considering an exit strategy.

Maybe the new splash screen messed it up

Actually I do like the splash screen; I think it's very modern, and the colours match the consoles. But if halving our track count is the price to pay for it, then it's absolutely got to go!

Its an interesting theory, in fact its basic 'game theory' . If you had 1 customer who used up all your time, and was affecting your business, would it not be better to end the relationship? if you have 1 employee dragging the whole production down, get rid of the employee!!........theres a bunch of ways to approach it, but trying to please everybody like AVID's trying to do, is almost impossible.

It's great it's just a bug.

How about a 4096 voice count bug? The Ultimate bug. The last version of Pro Tools ever downloaded.

Except... there would be another bug along...

Enter the Human Presence Activated Ilok.
It activates as many voices as there are people in the room. You just need an usb extension cable to take it out from the machine room to "sniff" the people.

So it can scale up with the size of your studio.
So everything's back to normal.

I think I would be in for 6-7 voices then, and upgrade would still be the best path for me.
