One more question:
If I purchase the Avalon preamp, will I be able to plug it into my computer through my Mbox 2, and can I bypass the Mbox preamp?

Yes. Use the line ins.

The Avalon 737 is definitely a great piece. around $1700.00 with a pre, an EQ, comp, and de-esser. If you divide that in parts, you could be buying a compressor thats about $400 dollars. Just think in terms of what you really want.

As far as I was concern when I got my API A2D, I just wanted the cleanest digital signal going in. That is why I use it spdif. My api compressor is hook to it, and I can tell you...for my uses it doesn't get any better than that.

If I were in your position I'll go for a class A stereo preamp, and forget about the channel strip type.

Where the hell do you get a 737 for $1700?
That's more like it SHOULD cost.

$2250 is the cheapest I've seen without hunting too deep.

The Buzz Audio ARC is a much much better box, but will also set you back around $2900.

The Sebatron Thorax is a good unit if you want valves at just under $2000.
Or Seb also has a solid state pre/comp call the Proxima which is just under $1000.

And there's plenty more.

If you're handy with a soldering iron I'd be going for something like Seventh Circle Audio's N72 or A12 preamps or have alook at JLM Audio kits too. If you're even mor ambitious then have a look at some of the projects at Group DIY.

I have built the 9K (clone) preamps and API312 (clone) preamps and imho the Avalon can't get near these. I have a pair of Neve 1272 clones nearly finished too....
