Default Inserting a hardware compressor on the master buss

Guys,
I am at a bit of a loss here how to do this.
I want to insert an outboard compressor on my master buss.
I have the compressor patched into analog in/outs 1 and 2
Can someone explain how I set this up in the I/O screen so I can just choose the compressor from the insert menu like I would a plugin?
Thanks
JohnG

In the insert popup there is a "I/O" in addition to stereo plugins and dual mono. Choose 1-2 here.

Edit: NO! Don't! I forgot, you probably use 1-2 for main outs, don't you?
Then plug you compressor in 3-4.

Or 5-8 for straight line level w/o going back through avids pres, they kind of step on the transient, gets a little mushy imo.
