Default Manual vs Pre-Roll Punch Ins with Apollo and Pro Tools

Hi everyone!

I'm using an Apollo x8 and have a bit of a head scratcher here... if I manually punch-in on a track with previously recorded audio, I hear the previously recorded audio (and console's input) until I punch-in and then hear just console's input. This is great.

However, if I set a pre-roll to my punch and hit record (pro tools plays from beginning of pre-roll) I no longer hear the recorded audio on the track, and only hear console's input.

Is there a way to hear the previously recorded audio (along with console's input) while using Pro Tools' pre-roll feature (like if I manually punch-in)??

Thanks for any help on this.

BTW: I have LLM on, and input monitoring (the green "I") off on the Pro Tools track.

This is probably the issue, Turn the green I off. With it ON, you will only hear the incoming signal(which is what "Input Only" means)

Thanks for the help, but yeah, I do have that turned off . Unfortunately the issue persists.

Try turning off LLM?

I don't have a UAD product, but I do "punch and roll" a lot when doing Described Video, i.e. reading to video. I use 64 buffer, use low latency plug-ins and monitor from Pro Tools only. When recording with Pre Roll, I hear the recorded audio in the Pre Roll, but not my mic, when the transport drops into Record, I hear my mic and not the recorded audio. This is normal operation.

I suspect Pro Tools is broken. It seems to be in 2020.5 and 2020.9.1 for me. And I suspect it's a bug introduced in the new Mixing>"Allow Sends to Persist during LLM" preference introduced in 2018.7 (https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/ar...s/?q=compato_1)

And this is for a one track session with no sends in use, and track output monitoring direct to an physical IO.

If that preference is checked and you are in LLM then the track playback is suppressed as you describe.

If either that preference is unchecked or you are not in LLM then punch in pre roll audio can be heard.

This makes no sense to me, why "Allow Sends to Persist during LLM" changes this behavior, that seems broken.

Can you see if Mixing>"Allow Sends to Persist during LLM" preference is checked or not. Try unchecking it if it is. And try to see if LLM then causes problems.

Sorry for the very delayed response on this. And thanks for trying to help.

"Allow Sends to Persist during LLM" was in fact checked (on). Unchecking it solves the issue! Now I can set a pre-roll for punching in and hear what was recorded previously (and the input to Apollo Console). Then once the punch in takes place I only hear what is now being recorded.

Thanks again for the help with this. Hopefully this will also help others who have experienced the same issue.

Great, glad it worked.

Looks like something got messed up here by Avid with those changes. This makes no sense.
