Default Macbook Pro and Mbox 2 Pro and bus powering

I've got a interesting issue with the bus powering of my mbox pro with my 2.33 ghz macbook pro. When I bus power the mbox 2 pro I get a crackling out of one of the monitor outputs. When I plug the mbox into the wall it goes away . . .

the crackling leads me to believe that the firewire bus is not outputting enough power to the mbox 2 pro.

To test out the mbox I plugged it into the firewire bus on my mirror door G4 tower, and it bus powered the mbox pro without any crackling.

Anyone have a similar problem? Thoughts? Are the any issues wth the bus powering of the mbox 2 pro with laptops? And yes the laptop was plugged in the wall when it was powering the mbox 2 pro

Here are the exat specs on my setup:

Macbookpro 2.33 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
10.4.8
7.3.1 cs2
3 GB of RAM
Firewire Drive chained to back of the Mbox 2 Pro

I use a similar setup and have not had this problem. I think you either have a bad FW cable or you are correct that the bus is underpowered.

In my case, I run a cable to a 4 port FW hub, the hub to the Mbox 2 Pro and a small FW HD daisy chained off of the 2nd port on the mbox, all drawing their power from the FW bus on the notebook.

Question - does this happen when the macbook pro is plugged in?

yes it happens when the macbook pro is plugged in.

Oddly too, when I scroll on the trackpad it makes the noise worse. I wonder if there is a shielding issue in the macbook pro. Clear some current is travelling through the mbox 2 pro where it shouldn't. And again this does happen when I hook it up to my G4 tower and bus power it there. It is also a non issue when I plug the mbox into to provide AC.

It might be the 1394 cable or the MB2P itself. I use mine on my regular Mac Book daily and the scroll pad with no issues at all.

The issue you are describing is also the same when some people using the regular Mbox2 on the under powered USB ports of Intel Mac laptops/G4 Laptops. Generally one USB has a higher voltage... but I;ve never heard of that with the 1394 port.

Firewire cables do go bad sometimes though... you could call Digi and RA the Mbox2 Pro if it happens on 2 systems and 2 different cables.

Good Luck man.
