Default No Monitoring Available - MBox Mac - Pro Tools LE 7.4

Hello,

I've been using this system awhile with great results. Recently upgraded to 7.4. Worked for awhile. Still does in many ways, but now when I overdub I can't get any monitoring. Specifically I can't hear the signal that is going in coming back through the monitors like I used to. The only way I can hear the signal going in is by pulling up the fader on that signal and then I get bad latency. Hopefully, someone here can help me get my monitoring back. I am not trying to fix the latency. I should be able to have that volume all the way down and here the signal going in through the monitoring. Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Jefferson

Something else must be up, since the MBox monitors the input to be recorded, before the A/D converter going into Pro Tools. Are you able to hear the input at all without a track being armed for recording?

I can hear the input at any time by pulling up the fader, but then there is latency and it is not through the monitors. I am going to double check that I can't hear monitors before record is enabled but there are no monitors. Also I should add that I am bypassing the MBox's pre-amps by using an Aphex 207D 2 channel pre-amp and going spdif from the Aphex into the MBox. Perhaps this is a factor. Thank you.

I switched back to analog from spdif and that fixed it. Weird. I'll have to check on spdif. Any idea how to get monitors with spdif? I'll call Aphex tomorrow I guess.

I seem to remember that the SPDIF input will not play thru as a direct signal(using the MIX knob) so the only way to monitor SPDIF is to bring up the fader as you discovered. The delay is a combination of buffer setting(mostly) and A>D conversion(only about 1.2 ms). You will need to set your buffer to 128 to keep the latency low enough so you can work. Try to keep the plugins to a minimum until you are finished tracking, then you can set the buffer higher(like 1024) for mixing and then pile on the plugins as needed(as long as you don't need to record new audio, the latency won't matter and it takes the strain off the CPU).

Unfortunately, you can't monitor through the SP/DIF input directly, and requires a work around with an external mixer, or similar solution.
