Absolutely. HFS+ is a bit of toy compared to using ZFS in server environments. It's a pity that Apple never adopted ZFS, they got close.

Having snapshots alone will be fantastic. Giving really great backup options (I could imagine CCC integrating with snapshots). And hopefully finally a proper optimization for Flash (writing metadata etc. more efficiently for Flash storage).

APFS is a necessary switch for Apple if they are to have a file system capable of supporting a robust cloud platform. HFS+ has time resolution of a second - not viable for in-time synchronisation across multiple devices (APFS has nano second time resolution). APFS has many more features you would expect of a modern FS (security, archiving, snapshots, etc.). Also the dropping of support for "old" hardware I suspect is to do with macOS+APFS support for the latest thunderbolt with SSD support for trim and booting (not supported in UEFI 32 bit on SSD). Interesting times ...

The hope is, now that we're paying Avid those exorbitant yearly fees, that they have the financial wherewithal to get the jump on making Pro Tools compatible with Sierra right now, so that once the OS comes out, Pro Tools works with it.

But yeah, that's a pipe dream, isn't it...

You know what, i see that GUI issue as a Apple issue.

If Avid was broke then updating the OS wouldn't have fixed anything.

However if Apple was broke, changing OS's may well have fixed the problem

I've read the docs and watched the presentation. Again, don't get me wrong. I'm excited about APFS, just not annoyed by the way HFS+ serves my everyday life. Although APFS was announced to be backwards compatible, but a few calls like exchangedata, searchfs, directoryhardlinks (for TimeMachine) (all according to the presentation), it will probably interact with Pro Tools in a new way and by that require Avid to rewrite a line of code or two to make Pro Tools compatible. I was curious about what you found so bad about HFS+.

Those links show up empty. But I know about ZFS though and I'm glad Apple didn't go there.

not really a DAW/Protools issue though.. but in the grand scheme of things APFS is a good change.

when you have a very large disk array with way too many files HFS+ becomes a problem.

APFS has systems in place to help with constant file corruption that happens on HFS+ more often then you realize.

I can't get PT to see HD hardware. The HD driver installer runs and says it's installed, but PT doesn't see the hardware.

Any HD user get it working?

(of course I am just messing around on a spare drive)
