Another thing, don't forget to trash your preferences whenever something like this happens. That could be all you need to do.

I had a session that would not open. The file consists of 60 or so mostly stereo tracks imported from Ableton, lots of plugs being used. I trashed the PT preferences, but I also did the "hold shift" while opening the session and it opened right away. One by one I started enabling plugs until I reached NI Guitar Rig, which I forgot to update after upgrading to Yosemite a couple of months ago. That was the "plug gone bad". As a test, I deleted the plug from the session, resaved the session, and it opened normally.
