Default DVD to harddrive

OK, off base question... but maybe someone can at least steer me to a site to get info. I have the G-4 867 with DVD burner. Is there anyway to copy a DVD onto my harddrive, or parts of a DVD and then view and/or edit parts directly on the harddrive? I have IDVD, protools LE 101, Quicktime. A regular CD has distinct files and this I can do, but the file structure of a commercially produced DVD I have no clue on how it works and if it is even possible to copy sections digitally onto the harddrive then watch and edit. Any help??

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,

this isn´t an easy job to do. First you have to extract the DVD , but i think that´s illegal.
Second convert the MPEG2 Files into Quicktime Files (MPEG or DV Stream).
For long Files it´s an timeintense process.

I think it´s better to record the movie from a DVD player into iMovie with Canopus.

regards

jochen

Try Shepmaster's DVD Ripping Tutorial.

If it is indeed a commercially released DVD, then it is certainly illegal to rip any part of it to your hard drive. That being said, if you follow the info already provided before digi deletes this thread, you might have some luck. I can say that I've tried it once or twice using the shepmaster tutorial, and couldn't get it to work. It's very tedious, frustrating, and it will use more hard drive space than you can imagine.

I, of course, am only ripping DVDs that I've transferred old VHS tapes onto.

The Shepmaster stuff works just fine, Diva is a great app for converting VOBs (the DVD files) so you can work with them in Quicktime Pro, and 3ivx is an amazing codec. And yes, the files are homongous.
