Question Mixing Tips
Hi,

I'm looking for recommended resources on Mixing in Pro Tools. I found one or two videos on YouTube which are useful. There's a lot of material out there! What did you use to help you learn your way around Pro Tools and how to make your mixes sound better?

Genres I am involved : pop, rock, hip hop and acoustic.

If you go to the air users blog Russ has some great tips and tutorials.

I would always recommend John Keanes, Musicians Guide to Pro Tools book.

Anywayz, to help me learn my way around, as smart as it may sound, I used me & Pro Tools

I one of those guys that when I get anything, I learn it inside out by just trying stuff til I get something; worst that can happen is u jack up

Mutiplantum ProTools has the best mixing tutorial, IMHO.

Not only do they send you a 6+ hour DVD video, by they send you a HUGE Nashville session with full instrumentation, drums, percussion and vocals.

Then they walk you through, step by step, how to work on that session. The videos are great. The instructor (John Merchant) is amazing and easy to understand. And the session is realy sweet! Every time I load it up, I'm amazed all over again.

Really, anything from MPPT is AMAZING. And no, I don't work for them.

Actually, you are asking 2 different questions that have a little bit of overlap:

1. Mixing in ProTools

2. How to get a quality mix

Most of the responses seem to deal with the 1st question...

The second question is the bigger, more general (and more difficult) question to answer.

My advice for that is a book called The Mixing Engineer's Handbook.

It includes interviews with famous Mixers in a varieties of styles/genres. The techniques can be applied to just about any recording platform as well..

wow. So many helpful answers! Thank you, all of you.

I was looking for more tips and other perspectives on the Mixing process overall and how to achieve that in Pro Tools that's why my question was very general. :)

The Mixing Engineer's Handbook looks great. I'll have to check out the 'Multiplantum Pro Tools' again. I googled it but found nada.

macProvideo also looks really great! The Pro Tools 8 402 Mixing Pop in Pro Tools? Looks good and with Sarah McLachlan's Engineer Chris Potter as the trainer I guess I'll be in good company!

Anybody watched it? What do you think?
