Exactly my thought. Don't bother yourself if the final format is going to be mp3.

And when you are bouncing only mp3, the bit depth option will grey out and switch to 16 bit but it is actually bouncing at the bit depth of the session and therefore does not need dither.

I drag my 24bit/48k wav bounce into iTunes, and and use iTunes to convert to MP3 at 320kbps. It works, and the MP3 sounds pretty good. The MP3 is VBR at 48k.

What exactly happens during this conversion process? I can't find a solid tech explanation. Anybody?

I understand your thought but I think to dither first and then compress to a 16 bit MP3 is the correct way to do it.

By default, yes.

You can change the settings to all the formats it supports including wav and aiff.

What do you mean ‘what happens’?

Its converting to MP3. There’s plenty of info online about how the algorithms and codecs are designed.

Link? I'm not finding a decent tech explanation. Algorithm workings? Read all 24 bits or truncate during conversion? How does it decide what audio data to toss? Detailed algorithm tech explanation - i.e. what exactly happens during this conversion process?
