Default Input monitoring

Hello,

I monitor at zero latency through my Metric Halo MIO mixer, so I do not need the input monitoring on ProTools. Makes it difficult to punch in since you have to record and mute the channel the same time so the musician does not hear his voice twice.

Isn't there a way to turn off input monitoring ?

I have seen tons of posts requesting this feature back from ProTools 9 and still hasn't been implemented ?

Regards,
Alex

Search the manual for Low Latency Monitoring.

Go in the preferences and de-select "Link Record and Play Faders" Then you can turn the record fader down.

This would not work, because when you record vocals and you want to punch in, you can't hear the previous recording.

Am I missing something? While it's not technically QP, you should be able to set the clip area you want to overdub. Then pre roll the record sequence, yes you will have to Mute the talent (jest, surely I must) but that is not excessive by any means

I also monitor with a 3rd party app

If you have a bunch of overdubbing to do and don't want to worry about pushing the mute button on and off at exactly the right time:

Duplicate the latest audio track you want to punch in. Set the duplicate track input to an used channel so it will record no sound. This will be the cue mix track that will give the talent the cue of their previous recording before the punch in spot.

Group the two tracks so they go into record-enabled mode together.

For the original track: set the fader in record mode only to -inf. Leave it where you want it for playback, say 0 dB,

For the duplicate: set the fader in playback mode to -inf. But set it for record mode to 0 dB (or whatever the original track level is).

Make sure both tracks are in Auto-Input Monitoring mode.

Record arm both tracks and set up the punch. Now when you punch in, they hear the pre-roll from the duplicate (cue) track, but this cuts out when the punch starts.

And when you go to play the session back, they only hear the new material that was just recorded.

Then as needed, you can slide all the audio in the original track down to the cue track to update it for more overdubbing as you go.

I used to do this back in the day before I made my peace with PT low-latency monitoring.
