Hey guys:

Just got my Quad up and running (thanks to Ryan K!)

We did the dverb 2.0 test last night and got 170 dverbs before the cpu maxed out. The buffer setting was at the recommended setting of 1024.

Ryan closely followed the getting started guide as well as various recommendations tips found in this forum for Windows XP tweaks. This a completely dedicated machine.

Can anyone explain the lower dverb count I'm getting? I thought I would get around 200 minimum?

Here is a list of everything I have:

VGA ASUS EAX1600PRO SILENT/TD/256M
CASE ANTEC|SONATA III BK RT 1
CPU INTEL|C2Q Q6600 2.40G 775 8M R 1
MB ASUS P5B P965 775 1
MEM 1Gx2|COR 240P TWIN2X2048-8500C5 1
DVD_BURN SAMSUNG|SH-S183L LS SATA 1
HD 320G|ST 7K 16M SATA2 ST3320620AS 2

I'm running PTLE 7.0 with a first generation Mbox. I realize that I'll take a performance hit because it's usb, but 170 deverbs?

Any clues?

Thanks,
Matt
Jamtimes intial results were 250 with a Mbox2, My results with a USB Mbox Mini on the P35 board were 237 USB vs 288 with a 002 Via FW.

You should be doing better than 170

Did you manually configure the Memory timing in BIOS? the ASUS boards defualt to one speed lower than the rated memory speed to ensure the system boots.

You will need to go into BIOS and set the memory timing manually to 1066, if you haven't done that its still sitting at DDR2800.

Run CPU-Z to make sure your memory is at DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15.

Did you install the USB 2.0 drivers on the ASUS driver CD? if so you may want to uninstall those since the regular XP default USB drivers usually work the best.

No one has needed to install USB 2.0 drivers since Windows 98R2.

I have no idea why they still include them on the Driver Cd's.

Hopefully its something as simple as the memory timing

Hey Sunburst,

Would you be able to walk me through the bios check/adjustment? I can get into bios, but I'm not sure where to look.

I'm looking at the manual, I havent put together a P5B board yet.

once your into BIOS arrow over to the "Advanced" tab. your looking for the "JumperFree" Field. under AI tuning set it to "Manual" which will open up a new set of Fields, Under "CPU Frequancy" there should be 2 choices FSB1066 and FSB800. Set this to 266 if your running 1066 Memory.

Under the same Menu should a Choice called "Dram Frequancy" that needs to be set to "1067"

Under the heading of "Chipset" under the "Advanced" tab should be "NorthBridge"
Find the field for "Configure DRAM timing by SPD" changing this to disabled should allow you to see the Memory timing that should be 5-5-5-15. UI would not changed anything here just yet just make note of the settings.

hitting the ESC should take you back to the main page. hit F10 to exit saving Changes.

Reboot. as the POST screen come up you may want to hit the Pause break key and make sure the memory is now running at 1066. hitting theenter key will resume the POST process.

After windows has loaded run CPU-Z and double check that the memory is showing that its 1066, their is a Memory TAB on CPUZ for memory and it should show that the timing is set to 5-5-5-15.

there are several referances to CPUZ in this thread. The Core Specs thread or you may want to do a google search for it.

Hopefully you can decipher my cryptic instructions and get this sorted out.

FWIW some where in (I think it was) the README for the latest couple of cs update's DIGI mentions that there was a patch to increase the performance of the original MBox, Not only is there a hit from FW to USB but apparently there is a performance differance between the original MBox and the Mbox 2 series.

The 170 number may indeed be correct for a origianal MBOX, Dont be too sad its still on par with an AMD Quad and should be more power than you'll will ever need.

If you dont remember configuring the memory than theres a good chance its sitting at DDR2 800 and you will see a big boost.

Hi gues!

This thread still rocks!

After 19 days at 3 GHz (Q6600) I now decided to go back to 2,4 GHz. I am never close to run out of CPU performance, so why torture it.. But it has worked perfect as nothing has happened. The day I run into a project that needs more power I just push it to 3 again, or even more. Just sharing my experience.

God bless you all!
I think you are a wise man to choose stability over benchmark scores, 19 days overclocked by a significant margin is indeed very stable by any definition. If the day comes when we need that kinda power its nice to know its there.
I don't think stability is an issue. Mine takes just about anything I throw at it!! It does 3GHz no trouble whatsoever and even did 3.34GHz @ 1.3V

Not recommending that this is what you all do, especially if you haven't done it before but these Quads have got some to spare don't worry about that

**Was going to put a screen shot in here, but this forum must not support pics.....?

The P5K series are pretty easy, The only things you need to do are manually set the mwmory speed to the correct speed and double check the memory timing with CPU-Z. Other than that you want to diable Speedstep (EIST) and Vanderpool Technology. About the only other think I like to do is diasable all of the peripherals I'm not using, RAID, Onboard Sound. Parallel and Serial ports, Floppies, ETC.

Get me your memory specs and I will try to help if you need more help.

Sunburst/Vocalvoodo,

Thanks for all your help. I didn't get a chance to run the Dverb 2.0 test after we made that tweak in bios (changing memory timing from auto to 1067)

I will run the test as soon as I get off of work today and I will post the results. (crosses fingers) BTW.. My Mbox 1 is updated with the latest firmware.

Stay tuned!

-Matt

Blade....

I can't get mine OC at 3GHZ using 1066 memory timings. You're using 800Mhz memory timings right? I can run at 1066 memory frequency with 4-4-4-12 timings at 300MHZ FSB....when I try to run at 333MHz at 1066 memory bandwidth.....no matter what I set the timings to 5-5-5-15 or not....I can't seem to get the puter to boot. I'm finding that 1066 memory is running as fast or faster in terms of response as 333MHz and 800MHZ bandwidth settings. I'm wondering what else I should try. The anandtech article concerning DDR2 vs. DDR3 evaluations had the p5K running at 4-4-3-11 memory timings at 1066 with a 333MHZ FSB at multiplier of 10. I can't get there.

Definitely a new milestone has been achieved recently. We've got some serious DSP power!

The price/performance is jaw dropping and it will only get better in the next few months. It can be done fully native now, there's no denying it anymore.

I can't wait to see your new results! I hope everything is straightened out. Believe you me, I know the feeling of getting many less DVERBS than I should.
