Mine (and everyone who has a retail box) comes with power cables for the Mac and power cables for PC. When using the SATA power from the optical bay, you need the power cables for the PC plus an adapter to mate it to the SATA power supply.

Just to clarify, when you say you spliced into the PCIe AUX power for your HDX card, would using a simple 6-pin mini-PCIe Aux 'Y' cable achieve the same thing? I have a Mac Edition GTX 680 sitting here that uses 60w less power than your 280x, so the same solution should work fine.
Yes, same thing. I cut the mini 6-pin to large 6-pin in half, then using a pinout diagram and multimeter made sure I knew which pins on the four pin HDX connector needed 12V and gnd and soldered them all together again!

All of the SATA to 6 pin PCI-e cables that I've seen are 15 pins. Do you have to modify the plug to get it to work with the 22 pin SATA in the Mac Pro?

You have to trim off the locking tab on one side of the SATA connector.

thanks! that's the answer I was looking for. Does the connector slide side-to-side without the locking tab, or does it sit securely in place without anything holding it there?

It does not slide side to side since the other tab is still there. I put a cable tie on mine so that it wouldn’t slide out since friction is the only thing holding it in.
