Default Recording Midi Uses All Memory

Good day.

Here's a weird one.

When I record 1 midi track I constantly get the message that I need to increase my RAM because I have exceeded 100%

I have anywhere from 8 to 10 midi tracks playing (which I imported) and am attempting to add an existing track. It's not even a lot of midi - it's just some program changes for a light controller...

According to the Memory graph in the System Usage drop-down - the song starts with about 11% memory usage and by the time I get to about 2/3 of the way through the song (average song length about 4 minutes) - I'm at 100% usage - and getting a warning about my memory usage.

If I am just playing the midi track - all is well at around 11% memory usage.

Disk Playback: Set to Normal - Have tried all the settings from 256MB to 12 GB - no difference

H/W Buffer: Currently set to 512 samples - Have tried the other settings - no difference.

Playback Engine: Set to Saffire

Pro Tools Version: 12.8.0

Mac OS: 12.12.6

Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions how to fix this memory draw?

Thanks,

Sparky

Usual sign of a plugin with a memory leak. Your plugins up to date? What third party plugins are installed? What are all the plugins instantiated?

Trash prefs, try a new empty session, move all plugins from the plugin folder (Pro Tools will put the standard ones back when it starts) Try playing around with a standard VI like mini grand. Is the system stable doing that?

(Setting dusk cache to "normal" turns it off, once you find the problem here go back and set that to a size).

Thanks for the reply Darryl.
Would this problem happen with a plugin - even if no plugins are used on the session (none on these sessions)?

Thanks,

Sparky

Are you sending MIDI to outboard gear or do you have VIs instantiated for the 8-10 MIDI tracks and then another VI in the track you're trying to add? Several VIs might stress system memory.

Hey there ChuckS.

No VI's.

Midi sent in/out via M-Audio Uno USB to Midi cable to Roland sound module.

Where did you get the MIDI files you're importing? Maybe something in them causing the issue, though tough to imagine MIDI eating up gigs of memory. Maybe try selecting all the MIDI in the edit window and export the selected MIDI to a new session. ???

Plugins installed but not instantiated can absolutely leak memory. But it would be unusual to see that correlated with MIDI recording. But still when you see this there is a bunch of fairly standard troubleshooting you should just try. Including removing all plugin files, trashing prefs, starting with a new empty session, etc.

Some I created - some I bought.

All different sessions.

Just started with PT 12.8
