Default Fixing Clipping in Master in Master Fader

Hey there!

If the only meter that's clipping out is my master fader, is turning down the master fader the best solution? I'm afraid of doing two things when trying to fix these clip outs...

1. I'm afraid if I turn down the master fader too far that my overall volume will be too low. I'm already at -6.0 on the master fader track.

2. I'm afraid of creating an unnatural sound if I adjust the track volume in certain places. Any suggestions?

hey, you'll have to turn down your other tracks because they're feeding your master fader or 2)you can apply a limiter on your master fader & set the output ceiling to about -0.3 to -0.6 db, then if you want it louder you can adjust the threshold on the limiter. i think there's a free master limiter plugin out there and i think it's on roger nichols website. spkguitar has a link to it on his page as well. but never adjust your master fader leave it at -0.0.... i hope this helps ya out.

YES! 32 bit float mixing has hundreds of dB of headroom.

No. This can be true in an analogue environment, but in PT you can safely rely on the master fader to control your overall volume.

No. The master fader is there to be used.

But try a limiter/compressor as suggested to retain volume on your material.

Beware: master faders in PT differ in a BIG way from other types of faders: plugins on master fader are POST fader. That means manipulating it might influence the behaviour of its plugins. The main idea behind this I think is that if you want to bounce to a file with a different bit-depth (24-16bits) you will want to use dithering, and that should always be the last thing to happen to the 0s and 1s before the file is written to disk.

Master faders also allow you to keep hot bus levels from clipping plug-ins.

So is it the best way to route all tracks to a aux bus first and put the mastering limiter there? Or just put it in the first insert of the master fader? Any difference on sound?

Most often I bus everything to an aux when mixing, yes. But I use that for mix bus compression, coloration and EQ if I want it, and have the master fader free for adjusting listening volume, whithout it influencing the compressor. Then if I want to bounce I can put a brickwall limiter on the master fader, plus dither, and use the aux fader for volume automation and fade outs, again without the compression being affected because aux plugins are pre fader.

Difference in sound? It´s all ones and zeros.

The best way to avoid clipping is to control your levels (tracks, busses, plug-ins) while you're mixing.

Take care of level and you'll get a mix with no clipping at all on your master fader
at unity gain.

It's also a good idea to leave some (or more) headroom while tracking.

Massey Plugins has a great free limiter plugin that can be upgraded. Check it out. at www.masseyplugins.com

What approach would you take with aux tracks clipping? (reverb, delay, etc...)
