Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD

The last time it happened I bought a BIOS chip off ebay for $13 and soldered it on myself to fix the problem. I was a ASUS fan also....I went with a Gigabyte b/c of the hackintosh and they said it was a good board. I went back to ASUS for my next build (X99) because I had such a bad run with that prior X79 Gigabyte system.

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
Asrock has probably the best power supply system to the motherboard of any manufacturer. I've just started using their X370 board with my Ryzen rig for ProTools and the overclocking potential is amazing, in large part because of how good the power system is. I wouldn't discount Asrock out of hand.

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
Can someone please show me an nvme ssd using even half it's speed potential, on a *DAW* app? Streaming kontakt, loading projects, whatever?
I thought it made a big difference too but I was set straight on this by TAFKAT who i am sure you all know at gearslutz, that DAW apps can't access it and SATA SSD is plenty fast for all DAW duties. I would love to see it in actual action, over 600mb/s(so, faster than sata 6 is what i mean) being used streaming audio, not a disk benchmark. Anyone?

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
You know what they say....it’s better to have it and not need it...

New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
NVMe is not really about bandwidth, it’s about IO latency. Although they have plenty of sustained bandwidth as well.
Everything is helped to some degree. Faster boot, faster startup, faster VI loads, faster saves, faster backups, ... the price difference between NVNe and SATA is getting smaller and smaller.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

(7900x processor, 64GB ram, 4 SSD's 1TB each, 1 x 7200RPM 2TB, thunderbolt 3) but said if i really want it because of what i read online LOL, that he's happy to do it. I guess a real world test, is opening a project and timing it, a large project, vs the fastest sata SSD, and also streaming samples and benchmarking it. That's the real world test for US as audio people. Of course, i am sure there is a much bigger benefit to be had for hi res video editors. As he said, even the 600 mb/s doesn't get maxed out with DAWs.. and from my own tests with the macbook pro PCIE ssd, i concur.. Furthermore, my windows 7 laptop boots up just as fast with a cheap $329 (was very cheap for back then 3 years back), 480GB sandisk sata SSD. I am on thunderbolt 1 right, on my imac. I have a total of about 20 things connected to each port via multiple docks and hubs, and never even come close to maxing. I have multiple USB 3 SSD's running in raid for speed also. Yes, thunderbolt 1 is 10GB/S, but i have 32 channels of audio in there streaming at all times, 10 external usb synths on the dock with a hub connected to it, 4 other UAD devices, 3 drives on the dock itself.. just on one thunderbolt port. Not to mention what i have on the other port, and the 4 USB2 lol. On another note and back totally on topic, The things we as audio guys and gals use, don't cause the disks to hit the performance improvements we are paying for. PS just to put something in perspective.. Pro tools expert had a big segment on upgrading to a 5400 mb/s, 2GB, raid PCIE ssd (4 samsung 512mb modules on board).. coming from a 7200RPM drive.. project load went from 9 minutes to 3. I saw it with my own eyes. Not 54x faster from the 100 mb/s drive. I bet you a sata would have loaded it just as fast. Of course there are other factors in play, other overheads to consider.. but they did that test specifically to show off the "5400 mb/s drive" and were freaking out about how fast it was going to be. I know for a fact the guy hid it very well on the video, but was a bit surprised as he also thought he'd get more gains.

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
I know my system is probably a little overboard but in my mind eveything that is build for overclocking is probably HEAVY DUTY so if you don`t overclock it and keep it cold you stand a good chance not to have problem and to keep your system running for a loooooong time ... I paid almost 5000$ for my old Mac Pro with the memory upgrade and stuff and this thing is still running like a tank 10 years after so half that price for the kick ass rig that I got is ok with me
I can also try the hackintosh , just put a spare ssd in and go crazy. But I never saw anyone messing up the bios trying to build a hackintosh specialy with Gygabyte Dual Bios ? you gonna have to explain that one Thanks again everyone for all your inputs and have a Great Day |

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
I wouldn’t trade my NVME for nothing...it makes normal OS stuff so quick....
It really is nice and really much quicker than SSD speeds (its noticeable)

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
I just open a RMA for the WD NVMe Black 512. This morning I installed the WD SSD Dashboard and I saw that the temp of my SSD was over 55 Celsius I did a speed test and it got to 61 I never had a SSD Running that HOT ! Can you confirme that it`s way to hot and give me a idea of the Samsung 960 Evo series temp
Thanks |

Re: New 8th Gen i7 with NVMe m.2 SSD
I have the 940 Pro running as my recording drive only.
I am running the SM951 NVME drive as my OS install
