Default clear command seems to do nothing

Hi. I am having a strange problem (aren't they all). I recorded from the protools aggregate device and I wanted to delete from the beginning to a point and from the end of the actual recording to the end of the session. So, I find the end of the last talk, hit shift-option-return and get a very nice selection of about 25 seconds. Then I hit the delete key. The selection goes away, but the part I am trying to delete is still there!

I have shuffle mode selected as well as smart tool.

How can I actually delete the selected part?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
