Default Time Machine during Pro tools

Just started using Time Machine to backup my entire system (system, project, sfx drive) to a large external hard drive. Never used it before.

I assume i should turn off backups while using Pro Tools. Is everybody else doing this?

I run TM too but only my sys drive. My external drives are backed up manually...

Let me rephrase the question. I am not looking for advice on a backup plan. What i want to know is should i turn off time machine when running Pro Tools? My guess is yes, just want to see what you guys are doing.

I also manually back up my external drives. Time machine is a safety net. I have SFX backup at home and a portable drive backs up my projects every day and comes home with my. Everything exists 3x (except system, only 2x but I can live with that)

I have time Machine running with all the time on default settings. i have no noticeable downside to report - and I work my system hard 12-14 hrs 5 days a week. All works great. I actually have it backing up my current work drives at all times. My sys and library drives back up once a day via a diff program.

I love Time Machine.

You are likely being lucky, that does not mean others will or this is good advice in general. Time machine should be disabled when using Pro Tools--which is why disabling it is one of Avid's standard recommended systems optimizations, it definitely can cause problems.

Once a system is properly optimized and appears rock solid then users can often back off one or two of the optimization steps and see how things work for them--all these things are heavily computer spec, workload, exact disk drive type/spec and plugin dependent. But users setting up a new system or suffering from many of the problems seen on DUC really need to start by following all the optimization steps to try to get their system stable
