Default Yes! The ultimate front end to the 001!!!

I'm so excited, I had to share.
I'm in the process of putting my shopping list together for my commercial project studio. I've been pricing hi-end ($1500.00 & up) dual mic pres, A/D converters (ala Apogee's Rosetta), as well as other numerous upgrades. Then I discover this: The RME ADI-96 Pro! Let's just say it rivals the Apogee Trak 2...no...how about Surpasses it (bench tests by an independant German publication found the Rme's conversion to equal if not surpass Apogee's)...Now the most important part: $1400.00 (US)!!!!! (oh yeah...how about built in compression, limiting, de-esser....oh boy oh boy.....)

24 Bit / 96 kHz AD-converter, fully balanced design, 119 dB ADCs from Crystal
* 80 MHz Motorola DSP 56303, for full 48 bit internal resolution at 96 kHz
* Inputs: Mic (XLR, Phantom power switchable), Line (XLR, 1/4" TRS), word clock (BNC)
* DSP functions: De-esser, Noisegate, Phase, Low Cut, Non Linear Compressor, Auto Level Control, Delay, M/S Processing, Dither
* Constant Double Speed (CDS®) technology preserves hi-speed sample sound even at sample rates below 64 kHz
* Sample frequencies 32 kHz, 44,1 kHz, 48 kHz, 64 kHz, 88,2 kHz, 96 kHz
* Complete remote control through Windows software
* Analog Processing on digital domain for 'analog' sound
* Digital Processing with Look Ahead for minimized changes in sound
* No, I don't work for them (yet). Check it out! www.audiomidi.com/hardware/rme/adi96pro/

Another RME product was discussed in the TDM group (ADI-8 Pro) which is another good front-end for the 001 (8 line ins to ADAT out).

They are making some very fine products from all the reviews I've seen. As good as (or better) than Apogee for a lot less $$$.

The consensus on that thread seemed to be that they sound better than 888/24 converters - for almost 1/3 the cost. The 888/24 has an A-weighted dynamic range of 110db, but the RME is 116db - newer converters. Apogee AD8000 is at 114db.

Not only that LW, but 2 hi-end mic pres and DSP capabilitites (compression, look ahead limiting, de-esser, etc)..and there really is no contest. How do these guys do it?! First the Volkswagon and now this (I just can't tell my Jewish mama that I'm buying their products). Dean

If you know of any reviews on this product (RME ADI-96pro) please post the link. I would like to learn more about it....just how good are the pre-amps? From other reviews it seems that RME does have great converters, but how about the preamps, compression, etc... that all in one stuff.

This is a 2channel until, will it work via spdifs or will you need to go thru the light pipe?

The ADI-8 Pro sounds like something well worth investigating. A collegue of mine is purchasing a DA88 and it sounds like the ADI will convert TDIF to ADAT. Just what we need Thanks for the info guys.

Why is the software for this unit only available for windows and BeOS? Can you access all those deep editing functions via the front panel? This unit sounds like a nice piece....at a great price.

www.sfb.net/

Just got word via private e-mail: This dealer who feels his varied experience put's him in the "know" says he loves the RME pre...not "warm" like a tube pre, but more clear/clean ala Focusrite Red Series....hmmm....I can live with that.
