Default Special question

hi!

hmmm, a very special question, perhaps I think to complicated....
whats the best way to simulate the "doppler effect" in a multichannel setup in a very large environment? (more than 5 speakers).
I guess, I´m right to assume that it wont happen if I´d just pan the audio through all speakers....
This should be for a special short film presentation.
or Is there a "multichannel" doppler FX - Plug in. (at least I could do some "faking"...)

thanks,
mubeau

Why not just use a mono effect through a mono doppler plug out of a surround output and pan that around? Wouldn't that achieve what you're looking for?

Perhaps there's more to it that I'm getting from your description.

WAVES makes a plug-in called "DOPPLER". It's a cool thing to play around with and does pretty much what you're looking for... though it's a bit confusing at 1st (and expensive for a single PI, of course)

GRMTools makes a surround doppler. Much better than the waves IMO. The waves can only be controlled with a trigger switch where you pre-set the timing parameters, it´s only stereo too. The GRM is fully automatable moving a spot in a large field sync to your picture.

In 7.4 the vari speed algorithm can be used for this.

Thanks for yur replies!

Sinukus, this is interesting!
But how? (Tell me your secret .

Yeah, I love the GRMs!

To be more precise:
well, the thing is that it should be a speed car (think of a prosche or ferrari), which should make
some rounds 360° around the audience.
Since the room is extremely big (way above 100m) there will be multiple speakers (above 5.1)....
So the question is: how to make the impression of the dopple effect?
- when it moves from one speaker to another.

simple panning wont help here, because then it would sound as if the racing car comes
up in one speaker and disappears again... no "speed feeling"....I guess...

or am I trapped in physikal missorder???

Thanks again!

the doppler only occurs when the car comes in fast and goes by (away fast). When a car drives around you in a circle there is little to no doppler in reality. It will just sound like an idle engine panned (of course with a lot of natural "funk" going on because of the changing position.
Doppler helps to create an illusion of things passing very fast. a car driving aroud you isn´t really changing it´s relative distance to the listener in the center.
But anyway it´s stil worth trying. the GRM doppler can automatically run your sound source in circles. Just try the demo.

Better try than speculate about the theory behind it ;-)

Hi Frank!

Yea, thats what I thought and did ,
yeah.... the "Funk" will happen because of the "more than 5.1" speaker arrays anyway .
