Thumbs up Do Your Homework!!

This is a thank you to everyone here for providing me with the tools I needed for a seemingly flawless install of PT9. I feel bad for all the people I see here with nightmare install/compatibility issues. Honestly, I wouldn't even have cared in the least to upgrade yet but my G5 was clearly beginning to hold me back due to software compatibility.

So based upon my research here, I bought a computer system that was proven, I'm using approved hardware, I got all my OS, iLok, interface, 3rd party plug in software and drivers lined up and installed before I even opened the PT9 box, properly optimized my OS and guess what? When I clicked on the little purple icon- it worked. Lucky? Maybe. Happy? Very. Did I do it on my own? Not at all. So once again, I can't thank all of you enough for helping me, whether it was directly or indirectly, and I hope future readers learn something from my experience.

At this point, even if I do happen to have issues, I know I started from the best place I could have and future troubleshooting will be a little easier. So here's to hopefully smooth operation!!

Yes this is a great resource and while Avid may have some glitches here and there with their software, it certainly pays to be patient and research how to install PT's properly and as you found out, make sure everything else in the computer is in order prior to installation. For all the problems that people have there is probably many more people happily working away on stable systems.

Exactly. If it works well on one computer and not another, you have to guess it's the computer, not the software.

Dirt, you touched on an important subject, in my opinion. You installed all brand new software on a fresh hard drive, basically starting from scratch.

While I know there are tons of people who upgrade their systems from their old drives/os/PT version to the newest version, but I very rarely see anyone with issues loading onto a brand new drive from scratch.

Most all issues on DUC arise from people trying to update on hard drives filled with years of files and downloads and applications, etc. Take the time to upgrade to a new System drive when updating to a new version of PT, and as Dirt said, educate yourself on the right downloads and updates, and start from scratch. You'll lose 2 days updating, but your machine will run like it's brand new for a cost of about $60.

Great point. We have another system that's about a year old that needs to be upgraded as well, so we'll see how that goes!!

Any recommendations on the 9.0.1 upgrade route from 9.0? Uninstall 9 or install the update on top?
Can anyone verify a big difference in how much better 9.0.1 runs compared to 9?

Read the patch notes... as dirt says... do your homework.

There aren't any performance differences, just some bug fixes. If none of them apply to you... it's not an important update.

Thumbs up Re: Do Your Homework!!

Excellent suggestion. I am in the process of making the transition to PT9 and have a new computer enroute next week. I've been reading up and downloading all the current plugin installers to an external HD so when it gets here I won't have to go hunting and trying to figure out what I need.

Muchas gracias to all the folks willing to take the time to post and share their experience!
