Default Avid Mojo SDI

Hi All,
Anybody want to explain to me why I should feel bad for not owning an AVID Mojo SDI as opposed to my old AVID Mojo. It seems it's just the Serial Digital Interface and an extra 1K? Oh and it's sleek styling

No really what's up?

Best,

Mitch

Digital audio (doesn't matter to us, but it is new), all video on BNC connectors (is that the case with MOJO?), and you can also connect a DV deck to MOJO SDI. You can output picture on multiple connections at once (can you do that with MOJO?). Oh, and since this peripheral is newer, chances are that MOJO will fall off the compatibility grid (either AVID or Digidesign) before MOJO SDI. The SDI allows you to keep an all-digital video path, if you have a display with an SDI input. HD VTRs only have SDI video outputs, so you would need to invest in a SDI-->Analog converter if you have MOJO and want to load picture from an HD VTR.

Thanks for the info.

The only thing that made my eyes light up was connecting a DV deck. I never understood why this option wasn't supported with the MOJO.

Sometimes the technology race is a killer.

I don't think that connecting a DV deck is supported in Pro Tools with Mojo SDI either. I don't have one yet so I can't verify.

The original Mojo could do it but only in Avid software, not Pro Tools, and I believe the same is true with Mojo SDI.

Another difference between Mojo and Mojo SDI is the supported video resolutions they support. The original Mojo only supported several Avid video resolutions (1:1, DV25, DV 50, 14:1, 15:1s, there are a couple more).

The Mojo SDI, on the other hand, supports ALL Standard Definition Avid video resolutions including ABVB, Meridien and Adrenaline based Standard Def video. This means regardless of the video resolution (Standard Def not HD) that an Avid is using, Pro Tools will be able to open and play it without transcoding it.

Also, This can now be accomplished on Mac or PC with Mojo SDI. This previously required the V10 video hardware which was only supported on PC. The V10 was $10k the Mojo SDI is $2495.

It would be great if PT could support it in a future version

I know but I doubt there will be an upgrade policy on this.

I really appreciate your response and shedding some light on the Mojo SDI

All the best

BTW:

Is the AVID able to play MXF files recorded on the Mojo SDI in PT? I always found it strange that the media recorded with an AVID codec on PT can not be played by the avid with the identical hardware.

At least this was the case last time I tested the mojo. It seemed like the only one able to play AVID MXF video recorded into PT is PT. Sadly the only way to interface with other AVID products is to transcode to QT every time you want to exchange something. Wouldn´t it be better to make the Mojo record QT instead of MXF since no one else is able to read PT´s MXF files?

I find it pretty ironic that to save time it´s better to digitize a film with a cannopus and then play back with a Mojo to stay compatible to non-mojo sites. This was the main reason for me not to buy the Mojo.

Frank.

Yes, always has been. It's not something that is tested, and therefore not "supported" because that's not a typical workflow but I've done it many times.

Maybe the problem you had is where the MXF video files have to live for an Avid to be able to play them back.

For Avids, MXF video (and audio too) must live here...

Harddrive\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\

If they don't live in this location, the Avid won't find them. This applies to Media Station software, Xpress Pro, Media Composer Soft, etc. It's very similar to the "OMFI MediaFiles" folder for Avids and non-MXF media. Avids only look for media at these two locations (on every drive), anything outside of these locations is ignored or "offlline". There are ups and downs to this.

Pro Tools, as you know, is the opposite, Pro Tools will see and play back audio/video from just about any local drive in any folder location.

Hi Jon,

About three weeks ago I tried to import a 90 minute mxf file created by PT into Media Station, in order to slap on a new credit roll from quicktime and insert a small picture change from tape. Media Station would not import the file, saying it was not a supported format.

Also none of the QT AVID codecs work with the PT-Mojo files. But they work fine with the media created with Mojo on the AVID.
