Default Record in 16 Bit or 24 Bit?

Should I be recording in 16 bit or 24 bit? I know 24 Bit is the higher digital quality but I have heard that Pro Tools sometimes has problems with the 24-Bit and that most audio devices such as stereos and cd players are only 16 Bit anywayz. Has anybody had any problems with the 24 Bit setting?

I've had problems. Media player won't play the bounced tracks. Makes you wonder, why do the music programs already allow 24bit recording when not much if anything can handle it? I mean, obviously the music programs themselves can handle it... Who wants to buy Pro Tools just to listen to a song?

please record in 24 bit / 44.1 !

when you bounce down, simply insert a dither plug-in at the end on the master fader, such as the Digidesign POWr, and select 16-bit as your destination file. WAV, WMA, MP3, etc.

with storage being so cheap 16-bit digital recording shouldn't even be an option in DAW land.

to put it simply, the reason DAWs allow you to record at 24 bit is because it sounds better. even though you're converting to 16-bit at the end of the process, it sounds better.

take care

24-bit, always . . . 96k, debatable. If you're mixing digital and your destination source is a standard audio CD (16-bit, 44.1k), then 96k isn't really going to offer that much (as you'll end up throwing away over half of your samples).

what rockrev said.

for CD purposes... and especially if you're going straight to MP3/internet/micepace

24 / 44.1 is the ticket

If your final destination is a CD (16-bit 44.1k) and you must use a higher sample rate with LE, I would go with 88.2k as the math is smoother and therefore less problematic when converting down to 44.1k.
