Is your automation on the return or the outgoing? If on the return things being out of sync with the outgoing isn't an issue. This is where you're not clear.
Franklyn has stated clearly it's a problem with automation on the return (after the analog summing) on the master bus processing.

looking forward to him describing his workflow!

Actually he hasn't been all that clear. He shouldn't have a problem then with the return being out of sync with the session audio if the plugins he's automating are on said return. They're working on the return audio and NOT the outgoing audio.

Well, let's take a practical example:
You fold out your mix to an analog summing mixer and return it on a stereo aux, let's call it "master aux" with a compressor and stereo spreader as plugin inserts.

Now you want to automate your "master aux" to have the output level of the compressor and the stereo width of the stereo spreader come up in the chorus.

As is, you certainly cannot do this by selecting the chorus on the edit window timeline in grid mode and pulling up the automation data on the "master aux".

It will be out of sync, because ProTools will not compensate for the DA - AD converter pass on the "master aux".

Don't use grid mode. Done.
