NO, my dear, it's not a question of who's been there first, hen or egg, the mixing stage loudness is a discussion which followed the playback complaints of the directors. The egg is the flawed trailer/commercial loudness definition (apart of course of subject of the movie, audience age and taste).

But, as you said, this discussion is as dead as a dodo ;-)
