Default Need more help with Drum Mics Please.....

1Kick, 1Snare, 2toms, 1 floor tom, 3cymbals.

I ordered a Shure drum mic kit from musiciansfriend.com for $400. It includes three SM57's and one Beta 52. Was this a wise choice??? Do I still need more mics?? I want to use the least amount of mics as possible. I will be recording a live gospel band. Any help will be appreciated. Recording tips are also welcome. Thanks!

if you're recording a live gospel band, you definitely need overheads more than you need spot mics on the drums. you could add a pair of oktava mk012's in the neighborhood of 200-250. the 57's are standard, work-horse mics for snares and toms. so's the kick mic, but you really need overheads. you should concentrate on those, then add the spot mics in the mix where needed. you want it to sit well with the live sound.

SM 57's are always nice to have around. They sound ok on a lot of instrument. Even sounds ok on vocals, or in front of a guitar-cabinet. Also sound ok with a sax. Also they are very very ok on snaredrum.

I heard that Oktava microphones are cheap. I am new to recording live instruments. I didnt know that I needed overheads. I was thinking about some overheads that can also be used as a vocal mic. Any suggestions???

How about the Audio Technica AT3035???

Rode NT1s are excellent for OHs. And, at $165.00/ea, the best cost/quality vocal mic I"ve heard.

the nt1 would work well for what you need. i use a pair of studio projects c3, but you can get the cardiod version, C1, for about $250. the C3 is 350 and has omni and figure-8 as well.

Studio Projects have a new product called the C4's wich are a matched pair of small condenser mics coming out here in Jan. I would wait and check these out before purchasing the Octava's or the Rhode's.

i was about to buy a pair of Octava MC012 for drum overheads and accoustic guit...I'll have to wait the 20 days for the C4's.

Bloux, have you heard the new Sm Di SP mics yet? I'd want to hear them before deciding on them over the MC012's (which are, IMO, the best bargain - by far - in a small diaphram condenser mic these days).

BTW, with a -10 dB pad inline, they're very good on snare and toms too.
