Re: SSD upgrade
Upgrading from? If you have a stock 5400 rpm drive, I would expect a major boost(but do investigate the TRIM function and get the right SSD for use in a Mac).

The 2011 Macbook Pro got a 'Crucial M550 1Tb' drive, & the Mac Pro got a 'Sandisk 960gb Ultra II'...both machines are dual boot....Mountain Lion for Pro Tools 10 HD & Yosemite for everything else.. ...so here's the thing...out of plain ignorance, neither have ever had 'trim' enabled either by an app, or using the command line, & I've not had any problems at all with either (The Macbook Pro has been running around two years like this).. Is trim absolutely necessary, or have i just been lucky? Should i do something about the situation or leave them alone? Cheers

Re: SSD upgrade
Starting with 10.10.4 trim is available for all SSDs.
You'll see a big improvement in boot times and app launching going to SSD, BTW. At first, booting will feel almost instant. |

I've had both my PT machine and my laptop on an SSD for years, my laptop hates it and runs like a dog, however the mac tower runs very well. I also do not have trim on either and I think it really depends on the drive brand, especially in macs, there are no rules it seems. I have a first gen crucial SSD in the laptop and in order to update the firmware (something that has been required twice) you have to initialise it and update it on a windows machine..? Brilliant! When I first installed the SSD in the laptop, I would launch PT or Photoshop and If I blinked I would miss the splash screen, now it beach balls and moans so I think you've just been lucky. (In fact I recently put in a normal spinning drive and it was a lot faster)

Re: SSD upgrade
You see I don't think that's correct because I have the identical drive in my other machine, identical firmware, identical size and it's absolutely fine, runs like a dream.
The only thing that is different is the OS. Mavericks on the slow machine Mountain Goat on the faster machine
