Default Kick thump!

I can't get that tight kick like heard on punk bands albums - I'm not getting that tight punch from the kick - I've tried close miking - miking the hole on the resonant head in the front.. should I try and tighten it up a bit? (tune up) -
I know I should treat the drums as a single instrument - Just missin that tight thump to sew it all together as one.. PLEASE HELP! I have two days left to get the sound...

Try some EQ... and higher up than you might normally think. Maybe 4 - 6 KHz. A lot of punk kicks have quite a bit of attack.

I normally use two kick mics, but it's probably too late for that in this case of yours.

It might not sound like the ¨punk rock¨ thing to do, but most of the kiks you hear on records are triggered.........

naah man hopefully this'll help....

mic the kick with an akg d112 at the hole. Do nothing to it coming in.

First up is the Waves C1 gate. Punk kids should play loud, so you can use this to kill the noise inbetween kicks.... 1st bring the threshhold up to where the snare doesnt trigger the gate. then bring the attack out a bit. like 1 but not .01 the release should be around 80 to 180

Then to a Q6 eq
Cut the kick with a wide q around 240 like - 10 db.
boost 7k with a mid sized q
take a narrow q and boost around 52 - 70
roll off everything below 50

Then the waves Rennaissance compressor, drum setting, drop the threshhold till you get around 3-5 db of reduction, slam the level till you get a peak then back it off.

Keny -

I don't have an AKG D112 to mic the kick.. I have an Audix F-12 from an Audix fusion drum mic kit - I do however have all the aforementioned plug-ins u listed... Should I use the same approach?
