Default M-Audio Fast Track C600 gain?

Hi,

When plugging in an AKG C1000 s microphone into the C600 interface I find the gain difficult to adjust, Its either 1 green box on the LED scale or at the slightest touch its in the red/clipping, are these really sensitive like this?, would like to buy M-Audio 8 track (new version)would this have more 'headroom' in the gain and not be so sensitive to adjust?

Thanks

Harry

How I get round this is have a good mixer as an extension of my interface. I leave the gain down fairly low on the interface and adjust my gain using the mixers fader. The preamps on the c600 are nothing special anyway so you get a better sound if you drive it with a decent mixer. Also it makes life easy within pro tools as you always just use the same input on the interface. You could always buy another interface of course but I enjoy having all my instruments and Mocs plugged in and adjusting the faders on the mixer. I have no idea about the interface you mentioned sorry.

Of course the more hardware the more noise floor but I use noise reduction software when needed which is not that often but it is very simple to use and very effective

hmm if you're intent on getting something else, I got a little focusrite saffire pro 40 for sale for under the price of the m-audio 8 track. Those are better preamps than the M-audio.
