Re: Macintosh moving to ARM
This sounds outright disastrous for Avid.

Re: Macintosh moving to ARM
Nope, but disastrous for people using unsupported hardware that will likely not get new drivers developed.

Re: Macintosh moving to ARM
Interesting point of view. Reason to avoid any investment in current AVID hardware at all. Then there's the complete codebase. Given the current track record of feature development, keeping up with OS releases and bug fixing, the overall picture turns even more grim?

Re: Macintosh moving to ARM
I fear this is PT11 all over again and the most trouble will be driver support. PT software may already be working on ARM

2019 Mac Pro & Apple Moving To Its Own Processors
So, Apple announced yesterday that they're moving all of their computers to their own processors. Having lived through the PowerPC to Intel transition, and having bought a new (very expensive) 2019 Mac Pro only a few months ago, I do find this concerning.
I saw something about Apple continuing to support both processors but who's to say how long that'll be for. Then there's the question of how long developers will support both processors? Am I missing something that will relieve this annoyance? I'm sort of hoping that Apple will potentially offer motherboard upgrades or something for the 2019 Mac Pro. Or maybe the transition will be long enough that it won't be a big deal? Thoughts?

Re: 2019 Mac Pro & Apple Moving To Its Own Processors
Hi Ryan,
I've got a Mac Pro 7,1 as well. I think we'll be OK, although perhaps we'll have compute envy a few years on. Xcode (the tool we use to compile and build plugins) will simultaneously compile for both processors and will stick them into a single binary. There's plenty of precedent for this. Back when we had to support Intel and PowerPC, Xcode made a "Fat Binary" that contained both formats. When we supported 32 and 64 bit Intel, there was a similar binary with both. As long as the code doesn't contain inline assembly (processor-dependent) code, we shouldn't have compatibility issues. The biggest worry in the short term is whether Apple supports OpenGL for a little while or whether the Metal graphics interface is required from the get-go. |

Re: 2019 Mac Pro & Apple Moving To Its Own Processors
Hey Michael! It's been awhile — I hope you're keeping well.
I'm happy to hear that from you, a trusted source. I'm okay with the performance lag, really. My Mac Pro is incredibly impressive and so long as I can 5-8 years out of it, I'll be happy. My last one gave me 7 years. Do you think there'd be any way to update our computers to the new processors, or is that a ridiculous question?

Re: 2019 Mac Pro & Apple Moving To Its Own Processors
Not a ridiculous question at all. It's a question I have as well. But Apple hasn't called me up and told me anything The modular nature of the tower makes it an interesting question, but there would probably be a lot of things that are different. The memory architecture would probably be different, so we might not be able to move DDRAM over. And the PCI bus architecture could change too. So I see as many things arguing against it as for it. But who knows? There have been a lot of aftermarket options for the 5,1 cheesegrater, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing for the 7,1. It's a great machine and I expect it to keep chugging along for quite a while.

Good to know. We'll find out I suppose!
Thanks Michael.
